what is lipase?

Lipase is an enzyme that effectuates the hydrolysis of fats in the body.  The Lipase enzyme is a sub-class of the esterases enzyme. It plays a fundamental role in the body of most living organisms by being a trigger for digestion and transporting and processing of dietary lipids in the body.

lipase normal range

The Lipase normal range is anything between 0 – 160. The healthiest range for the lipase level would be around 23- 85 units per litre. However, at times this range may go up to 140 U/L. The Lipase range can also vary depending on the lab.

An elevated lipase range leads to hyperlipasemia. This can be recognized through Lipase tests such as lipase serum test or lipase blood test. Elevated lipase causes failure of lipase function, pancreatitis and some other serious conditions if not treated at earlier stages. Lipase treatment will be recommended based on the lipase test results.

However on the other hand, there is also Lipoprotein lipase deficiency, which will be discussed further.

what is lipase blood test?

The lipase blood test is like any other blood test, along with the Lipase serum test it helps in determining the lipase enzyme levels in your body to ensure you are maintaining a lipase normal range.

what is hyperlipasemia?

Hyperlipasemia is the excess or high levels of the lipase enzyme in the blood causing problems related to your pancreas. The major cause could be the inflammation of the pancreas due to increased blood levels.

Lipase levels and blood analysis are usually done to check diagnosis for pancreatitis. The lipase levels can be tested by lipase blood test, lipase serum test and other lipase tests.

what are the causes of hyperlipasemia:

  • Obesity or overweight
  • High levels of triglyceride in your blood
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Existent gall bladder stones (as this blocks the secretions from the pancreas to the intestines)
  • Hereditary of pancreatitis

hyperlipasemia symptoms:

There may be no particular or obvious symptoms of hyperlipasemia, unless it transforms into pancreatitis. In case of a severe condition, the following symptoms may be experienced:

  • Symptoms of diabetes may be experienced such as frequent urination, fatigue, weight loss and excessive thirst.
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Weakness
  • Pain in the chest or back region

how to lower lipase levels?

Following are a list of things that you can do or avoid in order to reduce your lipase to lipase normal range and prevent hyperlipasemia or pancreatitis:

  • Avoid all kinds of alcoholic beverages as its substances may irritate your pancreas and liver and may not go well with your prescribed medications as well

  • A low fat diet and fiber rich diet needs to be followed. Preferably avoid red meats.

  • Drink lots of water, stay hydrated throughout the day.

lipoprotein lipase deficiency

This is an inherited condition which interrupts with the normal and regular breakdown of fats by the lipase in the body, which results in increasing levels of certain other fats in the body.

There are various Lipase treatments that can be suggested by doctors if diagnosed with the same based on your lipase test results.
