what is d dimer?

D – dimer is a protein fragment from the breakdown of a blood clot by fibrinolysis. The ‘D’ denotes to domain and the dimer indicates two identical units, thereby D – dimer means two identical domains. The presence of D – dimer in the blood is indicative of the process of blood clotting. D – dimer is detected in a blood by means of Monoclonal antibody. The D – dimer also serves as a marker for pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis.

what is d – dimer test?

A D – dimer test measures the amount of D – dimer in the blood, which is usually at extremely low levels and are hard to detect in the blood. If you test positive for this test it means you have high levels of D – dimer in the blood.

A D - dimer test is one way to ascertain the presence of a serious blood clot or monitoring blood clotting problems in the body. D – dimer test along with other imaging tests plays a vital role in the diagnosis of thrombotic disorder; a positive test result is indicative of thrombosis and other probable causes and negative test results rules out thrombosis. D – dimer test also plays a significant role in the diagnosis of blood disorders like disseminated intravascular coagulation.

why do i need this test?

d – dimer test report interpretation

If the D – dimer test results come positive than it means that the individual has the presence of blood clots in the body and higher than normal D – dimer levels indicate to a significant amount of blood clot.

A positive D – dimer test results however, do not point out the location of the blood clot and as such other screening tests might be required.

If D – dimer test results come negative then it means there is no blood clots in the body.

d – dimer normal range

The D – dimer normal range is less than or equal to 500 ng/mL

d – dimer test side effects

The D – dimer test is safe to use and side effects are a rarity, nevertheless the varied side effect of the test may include;

  • Soreness at the puncture site
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Dizziness
  • Infections at the puncture site

d – dimer test cost

The D – dimer test cost fluctuates throughout the country and as such there is no set D – dimer test cost. The average D – dimer test cost is not too expensive and hovers on the lower side and can be said to be easily affordable to a vast majority of the population.
