what is rotavirus?

Rotavirus is essentially a type of double – stranded RNA viruses belonging to the family of Reoviridae. The virus is particularly responsible for causing diarrhoeal disease among infants and children. Rotavirus affects almost all the kids in the world upto the age of five and with every infection the body builds immunity towards it and as such this virus is pretty rare among adults. Rotavirus has been classified into nine groups namely Rotavirus A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and Rotavirus I, among them rotavirus A is the most common cause of infections in humans.

Rotavirus is a pretty contagious disease and is transmitted through the faecal – oral route. The rotavirus infection damages the lining of the small intestine resulting in gastroenteritis or stomach flu. Although the rotavirus infection is easily managed, it can prove to be fatal. The best way to prevent kids and infants from getting this infection is getting rotavirus vaccine.

Rotavirus vaccine is a vaccination against the rotavirus infection. The World Health Organisation has strongly advised that the rotavirus vaccine be included in the vaccination routine programs all over the world. Prior to the introduction of the rotavirus vaccine, the rotavirus infection resulted in a high amount of fatality among kids. Infants and toddlers are particularly susceptible to this virus. Hence to protect your little one’s it is highly advised to get their rotavirus vaccination done.

The rotavirus vaccine age is usually before 8 months of age.  There are two types of rotavirus vaccine (RV1) Rotarix and (RV5) Rotateq.

According to the Indian Academy of Paediatrics the rotavirus vaccination schedule in India as per the type of rotavirus vaccination is that the Monovalent Live Vaccine (RV1)  be given in two doses minimum four weeks apart. The first RVI rotavirus vaccination can be given after 6 weeks but no later than 12 weeks and the entire rotavirus should be done by 32 weeks. The IAP recommends that that first rotavirus vaccination RV1 be given at 10 weeks and the second rotavirus vaccine dose at 14 weeks.

The Pentavalent Live Vaccine (RV5) has a different rotavirus vaccine dose system. Unlike RVI vaccine RV5 vaccine requires three doses. The first rotavirus vaccine dose is administered at 2 months, then second dose at 4 months and the third at 6 months. Each rotavirus vaccine injection is administered at a gap of 4 to 8 weeks.

If incase for some reason any of the dose gets missed then there is no need to start the rotavirus vaccination from the start but, completing the entire vaccine dosage is necessary within the time frame.

Both the types of rotavirus vaccine India are safe to use, however, in some cases the rotavirus  vaccine India can cause the occasional vomitting and diarrhea.  The signs of rotavirus vaccine side effects are;

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Hives
  • Paleness
  • Rapid Heart Beat

Some kids show allergic reaction to rotavirus vaccine and in such cases further vaccination should be not be administered. The vaccination should also be not administered when the kids have fever and parents should wait for it to subside and then continue with the vaccination.
